“No child seeking admission should go back disappointed”- said Chief Justice
On Monday, the Supreme Court reopened the window to pay the admission fees for students who were not able to pay at that time at the Indian Institute of Technology, Dhanbad.
Amongst many, Atul Kumar, age 20 who belongs to a marginalized society; was able to collect Rs 17,500 till the time he filled out the form the window was closed. He was a meritorious student who ranked 14,500 in JEE Advanced 2024 and has been allotted a seat at IIT, Dhanbad for a years bachelor's degree in electrical engineering.
“No child seeking admission should go back disappointed”- said Chief Justice D.Y Chandrachud, heading a three-bench of justice. The court has done extraordinary justice under Article 142 of the constitution by reopening the admission fees portal to Atul Kumar who was present in the courtroom.
He rendered his problem to IIT Madras exam authorities who advised him to move to Madras High Court. The arbiter suggested he address his quandary to the Supreme Court.
“Affirmatively, he is a talented student who has worked hard to secure admission. Our power under Article 142 of the constitution is for this kind of situation”- The chief justice said. He further gave him best wishes for his future endeavors.
Kumar belongs to a marginalized community of scheduled caste from Jharkhand. His father is a rickshaw puller who managed to accumulate the money for admission. But, unfortunately, the window got closed at the time of filling out the form.
